VIN Question

Postby steve » Mon Apr 20, 2009 8:45 pm

I just purchased an old Dune Buggy (Manx style) here in CA. that hasn't been registered since 1999 (last tag on ca blue plate). I only got a bill of sale with purchase. I want to restore it and make it street legal again, but first I want to register it with CA. DMV. I know they will need more than the license plate # since I don't believe they would have a record of it after 10 years. My question is-what should I give them as the VIN # and year??? I've found a stamped # on the pan hump near an inspection cover which would be under the rear seat-it is 1829084. Is this the VIN?? There is also an engine # of AH 021877. The engine is a dual port (1600?). Anyone out there know if this pan# is the correct vin and what year VW is it? Any advise on getting thru CA. DMV without a total hassle??...THANKS, Steve

THAT IS WHERE THE VIN IS LOCATED JUST IN FRONT OF THE PLATE THAT COVERS THE SHIFT COUPLING.BUT YOU NEED TO LOOK CLOSER BECAUSE I THINK TH SHOULD BE MORE DIGITS 11 OR 13. SOME OF THEM SHOULD INDICATE THE YEAR OF THE PAN.

^Thanks for the reply. I think that's all the #,s there, but I'll look again. I had one guy think it's a 1964 by the pan #. The engine is later. I still haven't tried registering it with CA. DMV yet. I'll post when I do. Steve
