Dumb question

Postby hippyman » Fri Nov 12, 2010 7:20 pm

I'm probably gonna get flamed for even asking this, but please, bear with me; I have wanted a VW camper for most of my natural life, and I am just now getting more into the position to where I could get one. I have already been looking at some models, and I seem drawn to something like this '63. My main problem is that I am not good at driving a standard. Did VW make any campers with auto transmissions? Also, I have never actually bought a classic auto before. Is there anything I should know before hand?

Yes they did make these in an automatic, but I think they might be harder to find. I have also wanted one of these to call my own but have not made it to the point in my life where I can afford one. As far as what to look for when buying a classic car, always make sure that things are original or have been refurbished to the right specifications. It can also be cheaper to rebuild a classic car from the ground up.
Have you ever used angieslist.com to find mechanic reviews?

I recommend buying a standard and learning to drive it, it's not hard to learn and you'll be much happier. VW's older automatics are slow and clunky, and these bad boys aren't exactly brimming with power to begin with. good luck.
