'56 Oval Window Beetle

Postby Lug Nut » Fri Jun 30, 2006 4:23 pm

Hey, I'm having a bit of trouble removing the semaphores on a '56 Oval? I can't get to the mounting screws!

Can anyone point me in the right direction on this?

Semaphores

Postby johnsnellx » Wed Jul 05, 2006 11:17 pm

I'll ask my Uncle. He has about 4 old beetles with semaphores. He's currently restoring a '52 Zwitter. The Semephores are out of it now, so I'll ask him the best way to get at those screws and I'll try to post a reply by Friday night...

:-) :D

Here's what My Uncle Said

Postby johnsnellx » Thu Jul 06, 2006 10:14 pm

Hey there problem oval person~

My Uncle says this is what he does:

Squirt the connections and screws with WD40. Wait a day or so, then take a small screw driver and remove the electrical connections (Lift the semaphore up to get at them). Then there is a larger screw strait back towards the botom of the back wall behind the semaphore. Remove that and you should be good to go. Let me know if I'm forgetting anything!!

Ta Da!

Hope this helps.

Hey thanks John (and your uncle) - I think the WD 40 did the trick. Once I got a flathead screwdriver between the top of the semaphore and the pillar slot, I was able to depress the piston rod on the semaphore. From then on it was just a little blood, sweat, and tears before I was able to swing the semaphore upward.... now if I could only get the other one off...

Dude, the word semaphore originated in the early 19th century denoting a signaling apparatus. It was derived from the French word sémaphore, which was formed irregularly from the Greek sema 'sign' + -PHORE.

doesn't everyone know that?

More specifically to VW's they are turn signals used until 1960 in Europe and the mid 50's in the US. The "arms" pop-up from the body of the vehicle and light up via a small bulb to indicate you wish to turn.

Cool eh?
