I'd like some opinions/ideas on installing one of these on a VW motor. Anyone done it and where did you aquire it?

Hello there,

I'm currently investigating the 911 fan shroud for a new engine
to install in my '69 VW Westpahalia camper bus---Bergmann kit looks good, Airkewld may also have one?

The general consensus I'm getting is these kits are not worth the $:

1. no internal baffles to correctly distribute air over cylinders, as in stock doghouse shroud.
2. engine case and sheet metal may have to be machined/reworked to fit
properly in engine bay--
remote oil cooler is required since doghouse cooler wont fit in 911 shroud

However, I'm still not convinced these reasons are enough to NOT install the 911 kit....
will post back as I get more info

My question is: can an actual 911 shroud and fan, say from a 3.0 SC or 3.2 Carrera, actually be retrofitted to use on Type 1 engine?

cheers...

911 shroud

Thanks Cliff,
I'm treading on unchartered territory here but would venture to guess that the work involved in retrofitting a shroud that would fit a six cylinder to a 4 would be cost prohihitive.
I'm going to investigate a company called Sharpbuilt Australia. This company uses Porsche internals with their kit. I've heard that the alternator that others use will not stand up to the load bearing of the cooling fan.
If you find out ANY info I'd appreciate hearing about it as I won't be ready until winter with my project. Mine is going in an Outlaw 356.
thanks again, joe

this thread is too old to post, but i just want to use this or to reply to this one so i will not make a new thread. Anyway my question is kinda easy for some.i want to know if im right about the purpose of the fan shroud in the automotive context, the shroud assists in channeling the airflow created by the fan, therefore increasing it's cooling potential. It works on the same principle as a wind tunnel.

thanks..
