Ignition switch vs. starter

Postby redhous » Fri Aug 14, 2009 1:39 pm

I have a 1974 Super Beetle. I just got it out of the shop, had to have a new ignition switch and I think they put a new starter in too. (I'll have to check the paperwork.) Yesterday it wouldn't start. Nothing, just a "click" in the engine compartment when you turn the key. Any ideas?

Im having the same issue, minus the new ignition switch. I replace the starter w/ solenoid. Battery is charged. Nothing but a click at the starter switch. I'm just starting on the restoration of this '74 Beetle. I'm excited but this is annoying.

Turns out the ignition switch wasn't sending enough current to the starter solenoid. I ran a wire from the solenoid (ignition switch connection) into the passenger compartment. When you want the starter to engage touch the wire to the positive battery post, should start right up.

Hi everyone! I'm new here and have owned a '75 sb for a couple of years. I had this problem with my starter as well. I ran a wire from the solenoid as well and it starts up everytime. I'm enjoying looking around this forum.
