Questions About Nitto Mud Grappler Tires Before You Buy

Whether you are competing in a NMRO event or just messing around on the weekend you really depend on your tires performing the way you expect. When looking for off road all terrain tires I ended up doing a lot of research, specifically looking for a good Nitto Mud Grappler review as I really liked the way these bad boys looked.

Below I’ll share a few of the questions I had and the answers I came up with by looking through forums and other online reviews of these Nitto off road tires.

Plus I’ll show some current deals on mud tires listed on eBay so you’ll be all set for that next mud bogging trip.

How Would You Describe the Nitto Mud Grapplers Noise?

nitto mud grappler close-upThe mud grapplers have a very aggressive tread pattern so you would expect some road noise. Anyone that tells you these tires are quiet on the road must be half def. That being said for the kind of beastly results you get in mud and sand these tires are not that bad for street use.

With the windows up and the radio on you can still hold a conversation without yelling. A little heavy on the road but they do perform like a champ where it matters most. Besides, call me crazy but a little bit of howl on the open road is music to my ears. And the ladies sure do love the roar of a bad mambo jambo black truck as it flies by like a jet plane. (and no need to mention the vibration when she rides shotgun… oops I mentioned it)

How Long do Nitto Mud Grapplers Last?

Tread life on tires like these depends on so many factors it is hard to determine your actual results. Are you mostly using them for off-road or daily driving, are you doing a lot of towing, rock climbing or mostly mud use? You get the drift.

From the research I have done you can expect anywhere from 20k to 50k+ miles. A guy on one forum said he put 50k on his and sold the truck to the next owner who continued to use them. Another guy who does a lot of towing said 25k tops. So depending on your planned use of these tires you can judge your results to be somewhere in between. Generally 35k miles is a good bet, and for a tire with such an aggressive tread that is pretty impressive really.

How Would You Rate the Nitto Mud Grappler Price?

The Mud Grappler from Nitto is a high end off road mudding tire so you expect it to have a high price tag. But when performance is of high concern you get what you pay for, with anything especially tires.

Sure you could throw on a wimpy set of Federals but then again who wants to be laughed at?

Besides by the time you throw on a set of death metal black Novakane wheels on those 35” Nitto’s you are looking at 3 g’s anyway so why quibble over a few bucks more for one of the best mudding tires on the market.

The real benefit of these aggressive mud tires for trucks is when you hit the wet sand, mud, or rock bed where the paddle-like lugs shoot you over the terrain with no hesitation – then when you hit paved streets the tire performs well with better than expected road noise and smooth ride.

Where to Buy Nitto Tires?

It used to be you had to depend on finding the tires you wanted at a local shop because shipping was a huge investment. Not so true these days where you can get free shipping at a number of online stores including Amazon and Ebay. I tend to go for eBay since the selection is much better and you can find some great deals from regular tire shops like TireBuyer or Discount Tire Direct. The latter especially runs frequent deals and special buys. For example at the time of this writing you can get $100 off tire or wheel purchases over $400. I’ll give tire size specific ebay options for sale in the “Mud Grappler Size” section below.

How Do Nitto’s Compare Against Other Off Road Tires?

BF Goodrich KM2 Tires on a CherokeeWhile researching the Nitto grapplers I ran into a fair amount of people asking how they fared when compared to the BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires. BFG Mud Terrain run a fair bit cheaper in price but it really depends on what kind of sale you can grab at the time. I have seen only a $50 difference on the mud grapplers so keep an eye out for special promotions on eBay or Amazon.

While looking for BFG KM2 reviews it was apparent they are well reviewed tires. The overall opinion was great with mostly 4 or 5 star reviews on Amazon. Some of the downside was on tread wear, a bit fast on the wearing when used mostly for street use.

Most guys tended to like the grip and found the loss in mpg to be minimal over factory tires. Of course if you are hanging in clay mud you’ll need mud slingers or super swampers but for most uses these KM2’s hold up fine.

Nitto Mud Grappler vs BFG KM2 Which Should You Choose?

If you do some comparison shopping around various forums you’ll get a lot of opinions between the Nitto’s or the bfgoodrich mud terrain km2 tires. From my research and asking around at last years Louisiana MudFest. I noticed a lean toward the Nitto tires however. Some of the issues with the bfg km2’s were uneven tread wear and balance issues as well as louder road noise. Of course road noise is a matter of opinion since many said the Nitto MG tires were louder.

That being said there are a lot of guys very happy with the BF Goodrich KM2 tires for mudding and off road use. So it may be just an issue with bad shop balancing or other alignment issues and not the fault of the tire.

Another positive in the KM2 camp is Michelin’s (the parent company of BF Goodrich) customer service is said to be top notch. If you ever have an issue with one of their tires that may come into play.
